Why Cricket Australia engaged Bilue

Cricket Australia is the national governing body for the game in Australia. It connects to cricket’s local and state levels through its members, the six state cricket associations. Cricket Australia's vision is for cricket to be Australia’s favourite sport, and a sport for all Australians. Its purpose is to inspire everyone to love cricket.’

Bilue was engaged by Cricket Australia to uplift the iOS app, making significant structural and quality changes in order to allow the experience to continue to evolve into the future and allow Cricket Australia to deliver delightful experiences to their community.

Bilue was engaged to align the MyCricket iOS experience with the recently upgraded Android app while helping achieve CA’s vision of making the administration of grassroots cricket easier.

Strategy & approach

Cricket Australia created the MyCricket app to help grassroots cricketers across Australia to track live scores, results, ladders, stats and players, but there were opportunities to improve the performance & reliability of the app, and there was also a need to align the iOS experience with the recently upgraded Android app.

Bilue was engaged to uplift the iOS app in order to achieve Cricket Australia’s vision of “...making the administration of grassroots cricket easier” while also taking the opportunity to make significant structural and quality changes along the way. After initial research into the state of the current experience as well as looking into what the experience of similar apps was like, a baseline of expectations for the new app was established and key focus areas for improvement to the experience were clearly defined.

A single platform for all things grassroots cricket

As part of Cricket Australia’s core principle of “a single platform for all things grassroots cricket in Australia”, Bilue developed an iOS version of the MyCricket app which aligns with the recently built Android app to ensure that all users have the same premium experience across platforms.

Adhering to CA’s principles of show me, tell me, guide me, and adapting the design system already created for the Android version, Bilue delivered a unified experience that is the one-stop-shop for all grassroots cricketers.

Better onboarding

During the research phase of the project, Bilue identified user onboarding as a key area of focus for the uplift. The ability of the app to be highly usable across a fairly wide user base highlighted the need for onboarding to better help support a more intuitive experience for users.

The final app was to be feature and content rich but could also be simplified via various aspects of personalision for a superior and memorable on-boarding experience. Delivering a suitable experience based on user type and allowing for multiple sign up options were just two key elements of the premium onboarding experience Bilue delivered.

Improved architecture

As part of the list of technical improvements made in order for the new app to be future-proofed and easily enhanced in the future, Bilue moved the new MyCricket app to a modular, testable MVVM (Model, View, ViewModel) architecture, allowing each area to be tested and verified in isolation.

Key benefits of the MVVM architecture includes modularisation which helps with testability, safety, and speed, as well as the ability to reuse code and avoid duplication. Code checking tools can be employed and these processes are automated and continuously running on dedicated servers.

Cricket is the number 1 Australian sport by participation and Cricket Australia is driven to ensure grassroots cricket continues to go from strength to strength.

By teaming up with Bilue to deliver a best-in-class experience with the all-new MyCricket app for iOS, Cricket Australia can continue to push forward with it’s primary goal of delivering to all involved “a single platform for all things grassroots cricket in Australia”.
